How Much Toilet is on Your Toothbrush?

The most commonly used item for oral hygiene, the toothbrush, is not as clean as one might expect...

There are germs everywhere but what makes toothbrush germs worrying?

Toothbrushes are known to harbour millions of germs including E. Coli, Staph Aureus, Candida, and many more. Faecal bacteria have also been found on toothbrushes, raising concerns that our gut flora could be affected (American Society for Microbiology, 2015), making shared bathrooms the most concerning places to store toothbrushes.

Toothbrushes are often washed with tap water after use and left to dry by the bathroom sink at which point it had already collected germs from our mouth. These germs do not only go on to multiply over time (e.g. bacteria doubles every 4 to 20 minutes) but the toothbrush is also exposed to other sources of germs in the bathroom like the toilet and neighbouring toothbrushes.

If You Like It (Clean) Then You Should Put a Cover on it?

Using a toothbrush cover to prevent these germs may seem like a good idea but studies have found that covered toothbrushes harbour more germs than uncovered ones. This is due to the simple fact that a damp environment is the best condition for many pathogens to grow.

A study by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) has also found that toothbrush holders are likely to harbour more germs than a toilet seat - it came third as the most germy item in a household.

Therefore, you could be brushing your teeth with faecal matter (or worse) if your toothbrush isn't properly disinfected.
